About Karen

Karen Smith is a retired major crimes detective, forensic specialist, educator, and author whose career has been dedicated to uncovering the truth behind some of the most complex death investigations. Over her career in law enforcement, she investigated and reconstructed hundreds of homicide and suspicious death cases, combining meticulous forensic analysis with an investigator's instinct for seeing what others miss. Her work has ranged from identifying decades-old bloodstains from a 1959 homicide that helped illuminate a long-forgotten crime scene, to reexamining modern death investigations, reconstructing events from physical evidence, witness statements, and investigative records. Beyond active casework, Karen taught forensic investigation at the National Forensic Academy and the University of Florida, sharing practical investigative methods with the next generation of forensic professionals.

Karen's passion for historical investigations ultimately led her to reopen the unsolved 1935 murders of her great-uncle, Emory Smith, and his co-worker, James Mitchell. Drawing upon thousands of pages of archival records, original police reports, court documents, newspaper accounts, and modern forensic reasoning, she reconstructed the investigation and developed a compelling solution to a case that had remained unresolved for nearly ninety years. That work became the foundation for her narrative historical true crime book, Where the Tracks End, told through the eyes of the original lead investigator, Detective Theodore Vollten.

Today, Karen continues to consult on documentaries, podcasts, and historical investigations while developing books and scripted projects rooted in authentic investigative practice. Whether reconstructing a forgotten crime scene, analyzing a contemporary case, or bringing history to life through immersive storytelling, her work is driven by a simple belief: every victim deserves to be heard, every investigator deserves to be remembered, and every forgotten story deserves someone willing to follow the evidence wherever it leads.
